Balloons, teddies and cake – what more could a one year old heading towards their first birthday really want?  This is Joshua’s Cake Smash First Birthday Photo Shoot – and we finished it all off with a splash in the tub to a) get rid of the stickiness from the cake and b) have more fun.

We start a cake smash first birthday session with some ‘standard’ portraits to showcase your one year old’s (or nearly one year old’s) new skills – standing supported, standing on their own, crawling and even walking.  I have some first birthday props that you can include or you can bring along your own – favourite teddies, favourite outfit, balloons, whatever else you can think of – to personalise your session and make it totally unique to you.   You can even take the chance to grab some family portraits if you’d like.

Then you choose the accessories that you would like for your cake smash and tub splash.  I have a choice of backgrounds and bunting for the cake smash and for the tub splash you can choose to accessorise with ducks, seaside stuff, laundry accessories – I add to and change my props all the time but of course you’re welcome to bring along your own as well.  Then we move across the studio and get going with the cake smash.  Despite the fact that you would think that all babies would love to dive in with unrestricted access to their very own birthday cake, they sometimes need a little encouragement to get going but the good news is that, even if they don’t really like to get messy, you don’t need a whole cake to be obliterated in order to get great birthday images.

Then it’s time to reset and clean up in my old tin tub filled with warm water and bubbles.  Splashing is definitely encouraged and there are always bath toys to enjoy – a great finish to a fun session that both celebrates and commemorates that all important milestone of the end of your first year together!
