By the time of your first Joey Club baby photography club visit, your baby will be about four / five months old so they’re likely to still be pretty limited in supporting themselves.

I generally advise waiting until your baby can confidently lift their head up whilst on their tummy before scheduling your first visit – the timing isn’t as important as the development stages when it comes to Joey Club sessions.  It’s designed to give you the maximum amount of variety in your finished image gallery and difference between your little one at each session so you get a great set of memories of their first year.  So if your baby is taking a little longer to get the hang of tummy time, then definitely wait a little bit longer.

When it comes to their session at the studio, we work a lot on my giant beanbag which gives them a comfy place to pose while allowing us to create lots of different looks with the blankets that we add to it.  I also have a specially designed horseshoe posing cushion which allows them to sit up safe and supported.  We work in three positions when babies are this age

• Sitting up in the posing cushion (or using a doughnut if they’re really well advanced)
• Tummy time – either on the beanbag or with one of my prop sets
• Laying on their back on the beanbag

As you can see in the picture above, some babies really love tummy time while others not so much. Having all three options available to us in the session means that we can keep your baby both comfortable and engaged so you get the best possible choice of images in your finished gallery.
